A very ancient name

But where does this mysterious name come from? It dates back to the origins of the Belleville hill and its former name. The metro station is located in this popular Parisian neighborhood. But long before it became part of the capital, Belleville was called « Les Couronnes-sous-Savies » when the hill was still wild. Over the centuries and its evolution, the village changed its name several times before becoming the municipality of Belleville, more urban and densely populated. In 1860, Belleville was annexed to Paris and has continued to evolve since then. Today, the street and the Jardin des Couronnes that border the Parc de Belleville recall these origins. They naturally gave their name to the Couronnes station.
