In the neighborhood
Everything you need, just a few steps from your stop.
The first metro trains inaugurated in 1900 were much shorter: they only had 3 cars. The platforms of Saint-Paul and several stations on Line 1 were therefore extended in 1963 to accommodate modern 6-car trains.
You can easily see the location of this extension at Saint-Paul station: over a distance of 20 meters, a crypt was excavated, supported by pillars covered in mosaics. These extensions, which can be found in different stations, are called 'the chapels of Line 1'.
A neighborhood worth visiting
The Marais neighborhood is yours to explore! From Saint-Paul station, you can admire the Seine and the Île Saint Louis in just a 5-minute walk, or take a stroll to Place des Vosges, just 7 minutes away.
If you love history, art, and culture, you're in luck, as museums and art galleries are everywhere in the neighborhood. Within a 5-minute walk from Saint-Paul metro, you can, for example, find the Carnavalet Museum or the Maison Européenne de la Photographie.
Change of style for the station entrance
On the day of its inauguration, the entrance of Saint-Paul metro station was in the Guimard style. This type of decoration, created by architect Hector Guimard, is still present in many stations, such as Abbesses.
Unfortunately, the entrance of Saint-Paul metro, damaged during World War I, had to be destroyed and replaced in 1922 with more classical railings.
There are 308 metro stations in Paris and the surrounding suburbs.
