The History of the Orangerie

In 1852, an orangerie was built in the garden of the Palais des Tuileries, which is now destroyed. It was used to shelter orange trees during the winter to protect them from the cold. The architect completed this building in a record time of 4 months. It functioned like a greenhouse: a large glass wall facing the Seine River allowed the trees to receive daylight, while the stone wall on the garden side protected the building from the wind.
