The oldest garden in Paris

The Tuileries Garden was created in the 16th century. It is the oldest and largest garden in Paris. In the 13th century, this area of the city included fields of squash as well as tile factories. Therefore, this park is not named so by chance! This space was successively purchased by several notable figures. Francis I decided to acquire it in order to build a luxurious residence with a garden that was never realized. Queen Catherine de' Medici is responsible for the construction of the Tuileries Palace in 1564. She also had the Tuileries Garden built. In this garden, there is a fountain, a menagerie, and a grotto dating back to the Middle Ages, decorated by Bernard Palissy, a famous ceramist.
