Chief town of Hauts-de-Seine
As its name suggests, the RER station of Nanterre - Préfecture is located just a stone's throw away from the building of the Hauts-de-Seine prefecture. Nanterre is a very ancient city, born in an inhabited area long before Paris! It developed a lot from the 5th century onwards, becoming a place of Christian pilgrimage, and then from 1837, with the first railways and passenger trains. Since then, many Parisians and companies have settled in Nanterre, which is very well served by highways and, of course, by the RER from the early 1970s. The city, which has become the prefecture of the Hauts-de-Seine department, inaugurated its prefectural building in 1972, just one year before the opening of the Nanterre - Préfecture station.
