In the Middle Ages, the city was simply called 'Mantes'. So why the change? Mantes-la-Jolie attracted many kings, including Henri IV. One day, he wrote in a letter to Gabrielle d'Estrées, his mistress, 'I am in Mantes, my pretty one'. The city officially changed its name in 1953.
